The problem

A fuel rewards programme wanted an app for its members, who earn points at restaurants, shops, grocery chains and travel partners in the programme and spend them on fuel. Finding the partner shops, the current offers, the nearest station and the points balance meant checking several platforms, and signing up and linking a payment card had to get simpler.

What we built

An iOS and Android app for a fuel rewards programme in Malaysia. Members link a payment card once, earn points when they pay at partner shops and redeem them with a QR code at partner fuel stations, where 20 points take RM1 off the fill. The station map shows what a fill costs after points, and offers from shops nearby can alert members as they pass.

Screen by screen

What we were asked to solve

  1. Fuel rewards app home with a balance of 19 points worth RM0.95 off the next fill, 5 points expiring on 30 November, a redeem at pump button, the nearest partner station with a 5-litre fill price after points, a double-rewards offer nearby and a reward still processing

A balance in points and ringgit

    What we built
Home opens on the points balance, what it takes off the next fill in ringgit and the points that expire this week. Under it sit the redeem button, the nearest partner station with the price of a fill after points, an offer from a shop nearby and the latest rewards, one of them still processing.
  2. Map of five partner stations, each pin showing the price of 5 litres of RON95 after points, and the selected station’s prices for RON95, RON97 and diesel with a 2-point bonus today and route and redeem buttons

Fill prices after points on the map

    The problem
Members needed a quick way to find the partner fuel stations near them.
    What we built
Each pin shows what 5 litres of RON95 cost at that partner station after the member’s points and any bonus the station runs. Filters cover the fuel and facilities such as a surau or an air pump, the station card lists every fuel before and after points, and Route gives directions to the station.
  3. Partner shop directory with food, grocery, retail and auto categories, each shop with its points per RM10 and offers such as double rewards before 11:00

    Where everyday spending earns

    The problem
Members needed an easy way to find the shops taking part in the programme.
    What we built
Partner shops are listed by category (food, grocery, retail and auto) with the points each gives per RM10 spent and its current offer under its name. Search takes a shop’s name, a street or a kind of shop, and travel partners give points on bookings too.
  4. Rewards history with a balance of 19 points, RM2.70 saved in November and 5 points expiring on 30 November, above purchases marked processing, credited with an expiry date, earned from a receipt photo, or expiring

    04 / 07

Every reward with its status and expiry

    The problem
Members had to check several platforms to see the rewards they had earned and spent.
    What we built
One list holds every purchase that earned points and every fill that spent them, with tabs for earned, redeemed and expiring. A new reward shows as processing for up to 48 hours, then gets an expiry date three months on, and a cash purchase earns from a photo of the receipt. The panel on top adds up the ringgit saved this month and the points that expire this week, in red.
  5. Redeem screen with RON95 selected, a QR code with its 60-second refresh bar, 19 points worth RM0.95 off this fill at 20 points to RM1, and the phone number to give if the scanner is down

    05 / 07

A QR code the cashier scans

    What we built
The member picks the fuel and shows a QR code that works once and changes every 60 seconds. Under it, the balance shows what it takes off this fill, at 20 points to RM1. If the scanner is down, the cashier keys in the member’s phone number instead.
  6. Offers screen with a coffee shop 120 metres away giving double rewards until 11:00, a countdown, an alerts switch and four more offers from partner shops, including a year-end bonus on all rewards

    06 / 07

    Offers from the shops nearby

    The problem
Members needed one place to keep track of the offers from partner shops.
    What we built
The nearest offer leads, with what it earns against the shop’s usual rate and a countdown to when it ends. The other offers follow by distance, and a switch turns on alerts when the member is near a partner shop.
  7. Last sign-up step, link how you pay, with MyDebit, debit and credit card options, a note that a certified payment processor holds the card details, and a link to send a receipt photo instead
Confirmation that the MyDebit card is linked, with rewards usually appearing within minutes and within 48 hours at most

    07 / 07

    A card linked at sign-up

    The problem
The programme asked for a simpler sign-up, with the payment card linked along the way.
    What we built
The last step of sign-up links how the member pays: a MyDebit card, another debit card or a credit card. A certified payment processor holds the card details, and a member without a card can send a photo of the receipt instead. Once the card is linked, rewards usually appear within minutes, and within 48 hours at most.

How the 8-week build went

  1. Listen & prototype

Gathered requirements with the programme team, then prototyped the app from sign-up and card linking to the points history and revised it in week 3 before the build.

  2. Core build

Built the iOS and Android apps, card linking through a certified payment processor, the partner shop and station directories, offers by location and the QR redemption that station cashiers scan.

  3. Live & handover

Released the apps on the App Store and Google Play and handed over the source code and documentation.
